PCOS is not one-size-fits-all. Understanding your root cause is the key to healing it.
The most common form of PCOS, insulin-resistant PCOS occurs when your cells don't respond properly to insulin. Your pancreas produces more insulin to compensate, which raises androgen levels, disrupts ovulation, and causes many classic PCOS symptoms. Blood sugar balance is the foundation of healing this type.
Root Cause: Genetics, a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar, sedentary lifestyle, chronic stress, and poor sleep all contribute to insulin resistance.
Adrenal PCOS is driven by the adrenal glands, not the ovaries. Women with this type have elevated DHEA-S (a stress hormone) but normal insulin and LH levels. It's often triggered or worsened by chronic stress, trauma, or high-pressure lifestyles. Your nervous system is at the center of your healing.
Root Cause: Chronic stress, perfectionism, overwork, poor boundaries, adrenal fatigue, and a history of trauma or high-pressure environments.
Inflammatory PCOS is linked to chronic low-grade inflammation in the body. Inflammation triggers the ovaries to produce excess androgens, which disrupts ovulation. Women with this type often have signs of inflammation beyond just reproductive symptoms โ including joint pain, skin issues, and digestive complaints.
Root Cause: A diet high in inflammatory foods (gluten, dairy, refined oils, sugar), gut imbalances, environmental toxins, autoimmune tendencies, and chronic infections.
Post-pill PCOS occurs after stopping hormonal contraceptives, particularly the pill. The pill suppresses ovulation โ when you stop, your body can temporarily overproduce androgens as hormones rebalance. This is often a temporary type that resolves within 3โ12 months with the right support.
Root Cause: Stopping hormonal birth control (especially combined oral contraceptives) after extended use. The longer the pill use, the longer rebalancing may take.
